Modeling Verb Order in Complex Multi-Verbal Predicate Constructions

چکیده
1. Introduction) Verb order is an important issue in complex multi-verbal predicate constructions, for example, serial verb constructions (SVCs). With more than one verb in the construction, how are the verbs sequenced? What constraints are at play to govern their order? In this paper, we attempt to investigate several constraints that are related to the issue. We also propose a different ranking of these constraints for Cantonese, a Yue dialect spoken in the southeastern parts of China, and Dagaare, a Gur language spoken in the northwestern areas of Ghana, to account for the different verb orderings found in these two languages for SVCs.

Adjunction, Phases, and Complex Predicates in Japanese
I provide a unified account of a constraint on adjunction observed in three complex predicate constructions in Japanese: (i) restructuring motion verb constructions, (ii) light verb constructions, (iii) infinitives with wasure‘forget’. It is shown that adjunction (i.e. adverbial modification, adjectival modification, and quantifier raising) in the lower projections are impossible in these const...
متن کاملDouble Object and Serial Verb Benefactive Constructions in Cantonese
This paper examines a specific kind of syntactic alternation in Cantonese, involving a single verb benefactive construction, and a serial verb benefactive construction. The former is a ditransitive construction with a single predicate and two contiguous objects (double object construction). The latter comprises a verbal complex of two transitive predicates with noncontiguous objects in a monocl...
متن کاملArgument Composition in Korean Serial Verb Constructions ∗
The so-called serial verb construction (SVC) is a complex predicate structure consisting of two or more verbal heads but denotes one single event. This paper discusses the grammatical properties of Korean SVCs and provides a lexicalist, construction-based analysis couched in the typed-feature structure grammar, HPSG. In particular, we identify four different types of the SVCs in Korean, each of...
متن کاملComplex Predicates are Multi-Word Expressions
Practitioners of English Natural Language Processing often feel fortunate because their tokens are clearly marked by spaces on either side. However, the spaces can be quite deceptive, since they ignore the boundaries of multi-word expressions, such as noun-noun compounds, verb particle constructions, light verb constructions and constructions from Construction Grammar, e.g., caused-motion const...
متن کاملPreverbs: an introduction
The notion ‘preverb’ is a traditional descriptive notion in Indo-European linguistics. It refers to morphemes that appear in front of a verb, and which form a close semantic unit with that verb. In many cases, the morpheme that functions as a preverb can also function without a preverbal context, often as an adverb or an adposition. Most linguists use the notion ‘preverb’ as a cover term for pr...
